On February 26, 2025, the Pentagon released a memo outlining plans to remove transgender service members from the U.S. military. Here are the key points:
- The Pentagon must create a procedure to identify transgender troops by March 26, 2025.
- Service members diagnosed with gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service by June 25, 2025.
- Exceptions may be granted on a case-by-case basis if there is a “compelling government interest that directly supports warfighting capabilities”.
Currently, there are approximately 4,240 active-duty, Guard, and Reserve service members who have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
