President Trump’s Executive Order “Protecting the meaning and value of American Citizenship” aims to end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to parents who are either unlawfully present or temporarily in the country.
Here’s why it’s important – A pregnant woman (non-U.S. citizen) on a flight that temporarily lands in the U.S. who gives birth would have a child who is automatically a U.S. citizen with today’s laws. Or a mother who crosses the border illegally to give birth to a child on U.S. soil. This EO would reverse that.
The Fourteenth Amendment states: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
The left will argue “born or naturalized”, the right will argue “subject to the jurisdiction thereof”.
